Products so great they must be killed

My favorite thing about startup acquisitions is the pretense. permalink

Everything is great they say. This will be better for everyone! permalink

Then they kill the product being acquired. Better yet: they explicitly say up front that they have no interest in keeping it around. permalink

The product was so great that it has to go away. permalink

Most of these acquisitions are just glorified hirings. permalink

I had a startup and it failed so I know that moment of desparation. Torward the end there were some odd acqu-hire overtures thrown our way. It was too depressing for me to consider the pat on the back and commit to 3 or 4 years at a company I didn't want to work for. permalink

We had failed. That was fact. A bullshit acquisition wasn't going to change that. permalink
